Thermal Imaging Cavity Wall Insulation

When the cavity wall insulation (CWI) installer doesn't pump in quite enough insulation, you get this honeycomb effect, with heat loss in circles around the injection point. While this may have a limited heat loss effect, a bigger issue may be the creation of corresponding cold spots internally which could act as a point for the formation of condensation and/or potentially mould.

All CWI installers should offer a thermal scan to provide assurance about the quality of the work.

On the outside the missing insulation appears as a warmer area, in the inside missing insulation looks like a cool spot.

This house was in the centre of Edinburgh, and we combined the thermal imaging survey, with an air tightness test (using Retrotec blower door fan), to provide the owning agency with a combined report on issues in the property that could lead to excessive heat loss.

The survey was carried out late evening when the external air temperature had dropped sufficiently to allow the temperature difference needed to conduct thermal scans to exist.
